Artem Sytnyk, deputy head of National Agency on Corruption Prevention, dismissed from his post

Artem Sytnyk, deputy head of the National Agency on Corruption Prevention, was dismissed from his post, MP Oleksii Honcharenko reported. This was also confirmed by the NACP.

Sytnyk became the deputy head of the National Agency on Corruption Prevention in May 2022. According to the Agency, in his position, he was responsible for a number of areas, in particular:

  • financial control, conducting special inspections, lifestyle monitoring, checking compliance with legislation, including in the field of corruption prevention;
  • prevention and settlement of conflicts of interest;
  • monitoring and control of the implementation of legislation on ethical behavior.

The reason for the dismissal is still unknown.

Before his appointment, Sytnyk headed the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU). He was the first head of this body and managed it in 2015-2022.

Sytnyk as head of NABU

Artem Sytnyk became the director of NABU in 2015 and headed the agency until April 2022. NACP believes that during Sytnyk's leadership, NABU became a standard of integrity in the system of authorities. During this time, the department helped bring to justice more than 1,000 corrupt officials, including six ministers and their deputies, 13 heads of central executive bodies, 22 lawmakers, 70 judges, and 94 heads of state-owned enterprises.

However, Sytnyk's directorship was also accompanied by the story of his appointment to the position. On September 16, 2020, the Constitutional Court recognized as illegal the decree of the President of Ukraine on the appointment of Artem Sytnyk as the director of NABU and a number of provisions of the law on NABU, which concerned the powers of the president in relation to the Bureau.

Minister of Justice Denys Malyuska then stated that even after the decision entered into force on December 16, 2020, Artem Sytnyk remains the legal director of NABU. According to Malyuska, the procedure for appointing a new head of NABU may be necessary only in 2022, when the term of office of the director of NABU expires.

In the end, Sytnyk headed the department until the end of his term of office in April 2022.
