Zelenskyy on Biden's withdrawal from presidential race: We respect tough but strong decision

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy reacted to the statement of the current US leader Joe Biden that he will not run for the country's presidential election. He noted that he respects his tough but strong decision, he wrote on X.

The head of state said that during his presidency, Biden made a number of tough and strong decisions, which "will be remembered as bold steps taken by President Biden in response to challenging times."

"We will always be thankful for President Biden's leadership. He supported our country during the most dramatic moment in history, assisted us in preventing Putin from occupying our country, and has continued to support us throughout this terrible war," Zelenskyy added.

He also expressed hope that continued strong American leadership "will prevent Russian evil from succeeding or making its aggression pay off."

Background

In the evening of July 21, US President Joe Biden announced that he was abandoning his intention to run again for the post of head of state. According to him, he is doing it in the interests of the state and the Democratic Party. Biden also spoke in favor of Vice President Kamala Harris becoming the Democratic candidate.

Biden's exit from the presidential race came after weeks of concern about his health and age. There has been growing skepticism within the Democratic Party and among its patrons about the incumbent's ability to defeat Republican nominee Donald Trump and effectively govern the country for another four years.

Donald Trump, minutes after Biden announced his withdrawal from the race, called his former rival “worst president by far in the history of our country" and said that Kamala Harris would be easier for him to defeat.
