G7 security guarantees, NATO summit results and new military aid: highlights
The G7 states have agreed on a declaration of support for Ukraine, which includes security guarantees. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the Ukrainian delegation was returning from the NATO summit with a security victory. Allies announced new military aid. G7 declaration
On the sidelines of the NATO summit in Vilnius, the leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) agreed on a Joint Declaration of Support for Ukraine, in which they stated that they would each work with Ukraine on specific bilateral long-term security commitments and arrangements, including
- measures to help Ukraine defend itself and prevent new aggression;
- measures in case of new aggression;
- support in bringing Russia to justice for its aggression.
For its part, Ukraine pledged to strengthen accountability and continue reforms.
The Declaration is a general framework document. The next step is to conclude a system of bilateral security agreements between Ukraine and the guarantor states within the framework of multilateral cooperation.
NATO summit outcomes for Ukraine
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that at the NATO summit in Vilnius, Ukraine received the support of leaders and unambiguity about its membership in the Alliance.
He emphasized that "the Ukrainian delegation is returning home with a significant security victory," referring to the declaration of support for Ukraine.
Zelenskyy also emphasized that Ukraine will never give up its territories, even "one village with one old gentleman," in exchange for "any status" in the context of negotiations with Russia and the country's accession to NATO.
In addition, during the NATO summit, the President met with the leaders of the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, the Netherlands, and Australia.
New military assistance
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held talks with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. As a result, Berlin agreed to provide additional Patriots, and Canberra promised to provide 30 more Bushmaster armored personnel carriers.
Zelenskyy also announced "powerful agreements" with Canada on armored vehicles.
At the same time, Norway announced that it would provide Ukraine with an aid package of NASAMS anti-aircraft missile systems and 1,000 small reconnaissance Black Hornet drones.
Attack on Zaporizhzhya
On the afternoon of July 12, Russian occupation forces attacked the city of Zaporizhzhya. 18 people were injured, including six children.
Regional governor Yuriy Malashko said that people were injured as a result of an unidentified enemy aircraft falling in a residential area of the city.
