New fires near Moscow and a petition to commemorate Mariupol's defenders: last night's highlights

Russia's largest lead plant and paint and varnish warehouse caught fire near Moscow, and a petition calling for the establishment of a Day of Honoring the Defenders of Mariupol gathered the required number of votes. Here is what you may have missed from the previous night.

New fires near Moscow

A fire broke out at a lead production plant in the city of Voskresensk, Moscow Region. Russian sources report that this plant is the country's largest lead producer. And in the village of Shakhovskaya, 154 km from Moscow, a warehouse with paint and varnish products caught fire.

On the evening of March 25, a fire broke out in the battery shop at the Fregat plant. The fact of the fire was confirmed by the Main Directorate of the Russian Emergencies Ministry in the Moscow Region. The agency noted that at 21:39 Moscow time, the fire was contained over an area of 100 square meters. According to preliminary reports, there were no casualties.

Meanwhile, a paint and varnish warehouse caught fire in the village of Shakhovskaya at around 21:00 Kyiv time. The fire is visible from different parts of the city district, Russian resources wrote.

Petition for the Day of Honoring Mariupol Defenders

A petition calling for the establishment of a Day of Honoring the Defenders of Mariupol on May 20 has collected the required 25,000 votes in 1.5 days. It is now up to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to consider it.

“The defense of Mariupol is a unique operation that has no comparison in the modern history of Ukraine. The battle for Mariupol has become a symbol of invincibility for Ukrainians. Hundreds of fallen soldiers gave the most valuable thing – their lives, and hundreds of wounded and captured defenders deserve this memorable day for their desperate actions,” the petition says.

Briefly about other news:

  • Almost three thousand IDPs from temporarily occupied Mariupol will be provided with social housing in different regions of the country. The first to receive housing will be families in dire need, including families with many children and families of fallen Ukrainian soldiers;
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin said that 10 aircraft capable of carrying tactical nuclear weapons were deployed in Belarus;
  • A modular town for temporary accommodation of those who lost their homes due to Russia's war against Ukraine was opened in Dmytrivka, Kyiv Oblast. The town is designed to accommodate 252 people at a time;
  • The Russian Defense Ministry accused the Azerbaijani military of violating the contact line in Nagorno-Karabakh. In return, Azerbaijan said it had “taken appropriate control measures” to prevent the transportation of weapons and ammunition from Armenia;
  • The mummified remains of two unidentified civilians were found near a farm in the village of Sulyhivka in Izium Raion of Kharkiv Oblast. Preliminarily, they died in the spring of 2022 during a Russian air strike.
