Polish President says Germany breached its arms supply promises

Berlin promised Poland Leopard tanks to replace those the country handed over to Ukraine. However, the German government breached its word, reports Die Welt quoting Polish President Andrzej Duda.

"The government didn't keep that promise. And frankly speaking, we are very disappointed about it. We have provided Ukraine with a large number of tanks because we believe it is our responsibility as a neighbor," said Duda.

The President stressed that since Poland handed over its tanks to Ukraine, it hoped for the support of NATO, the United States, and Germany.

"Most of our tank arsenal in the Polish Armed Forces are German Leopard tanks. So if Germany supported us, if we got a replacement, we would be very happy," said the Polish President.

He also said that the German government was doing too little to help Ukraine.

Polish help for Ukraine

Earlier, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki confirmed to Polska Times that his country had handed over its tanks to Ukraine. Also, on April 29, the Ukrainian office of Polskie Radio said that Poland had donated 7 billion zlotys worth of military equipment to Ukraine.

Also, on May 22, the Presidents of Ukraine and Poland, Volodymyr Zelensky and Andrzej Duda, addressed the Verkhovna Rada. Duda became the first foreign leader to visit Kyiv to address the Ukrainian parliament personally. He stressed that Poland would do everything possible to help Ukraine become the EU member.

As of May 23, says UN, more than 6.5 million people left Ukraine. Most of them went to Poland - 3.5 million people.
