Sanctions against Russia's nuclear industry and Ukraine's appeal to IOC sponsors: last night's highlights

Zelenskyy imposed sanctions on Russia's nuclear industry and announced that Ukraine had appealed to the sponsors of the Olympic Committee about the participation of Russian athletes. Here is what you may have missed from the previous night.

Sanctions against the Russian nuclear industry

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has enacted the decision of the National Security and Defense Council to impose sanctions on Russia's nuclear industry.

A total of 200 Russian companies were subject to the restrictions:

  • Rosatom;
  • Atomic Energy Power Corporation;
  • Rosatom Automated Control Systems;
  • Rusatom - Digital Solutions;
  • NIIAR-Generation;
  • Corporate Academy of the Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation;
  • Rusatom Healthcare.

The sanctions, which are imposed for 50 years, include, in particular:

  • blocking of assets;
  • restriction of trade operations;
  • termination of transit of resources through the territory of Ukraine;
  • revocation of all licenses;
  • prohibition of participation in the privatization or lease of state property.

Ukraine's appeal to IOC sponsors

Ukraine has sent letters to companies that support the International Olympic Committee protesting the participation of Russian athletes in the Olympics and international tournaments, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.

These are large international companies that are interested in ensuring that their reputation and support are not used to propagandize the war,” Zelenskyy explained.

He added that Ukraine is continuing its diplomatic marathon to prevent Russia from using world sports and the Olympic movement for its propaganda.

Situation in Enerhodar

There is no heating in the temporarily occupied city of Enerhodar, Zaporizhzhia Oblast. About 15,000 residents remain in the city, said Mayor Dmytro Orlov.

“The situation in Enerhodar remains critical, as there is almost no heating in the city, and the enemy is not allowing any of the nuclear power units to start up. We have no other source of centralized heating. There is no hot water either. The temperature in the houses is 10-15 degrees,” he said.

Briefly about other news:

  • Russian media reported that Russian militant Igor Mangushev was shot in the head. Earlier, he made a speech during which he justified the actions of the occupiers in Ukraine and held the skull of an allegedly killed Ukrainian soldier. The propagandists say that doctors assess the militant's condition as “consistently serious with a negative tendency”.
  • Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov said that he was unaware of any intention to transfer him to the post of head of the Ministry of Strategic Industries, and even if such a proposal was made, he would refuse;
  • Pope Francis said he was ready to meet with the presidents of Ukraine and Russia, Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Vladimir Putin, to ask for peace;
  • In temporarily occupied Donetsk, trainee waitresses at the Basylic cafe were fired after a video of the girls singing the Ukrainian anthem at work was posted online.
