Shelling of school, military run over, assassination attempt on Bulgaria's Prosecutor General: highlights of the day
Russian shells hit an educational institution in Chernihiv Oblast, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy submitted bills to the Rada to extend martial law and mobilization, and a driver hit two soldiers and a police officer in Khmelnytskyi. We have collected the main news for the day.
New enemy stikes
In Chernihiv Oblast, Russian troops fired on Novhorod-Siverskyi district and hit an educational institution. As a result, a 14-year-old child died. According to preliminary reports, two more civilians were injured. The school building was also partially destroyed and private houses were damaged.
Also in the evening, the occupiers attacked Kherson. As a result of the shelling, private houses are burning, firefighters are working at the scene. There is one victim. The village of Kizomys, Kherson Oblast, also came under Russian fire as the Russians dropped two guided bombs.
According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, on May 1, Russians launched 19 missile and 13 air strikes on the territory of Ukraine and fired 13 times from multiple launch rocket systems. There are dead and wounded, including children.
In Avdiyivka, people have been trapped under the rubble for over a day. Special equipment is needed to clear the rubble, but it cannot get there because of the incessant shelling.
Meanwhile, in Pavlohrad district of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, the number of victims of missile strike has increased: now there are 40, including five children. The youngest victim is only 8 years old.
Extension of martial law and mobilization
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has submitted to the Verkhovna Rada bills to extend martial law and general mobilization for another 90 days, until August 18.
Driver runs over military and police officer
An accident occurred in Khmelnytskyi: the driver of an Opel hit two soldiers and a police officer on a pedestrian crossing. One of the soldiers was killed, the others were injured. The driver was detained.
Russian TV suggests killing Polish ambassador
Former Russian children's ombudsman Pavel Astakhov said on a Russian talk show that the assassination of the Polish ambassador to Russia would be "within the framework of international law" because of all the "anti-Russian actions" of the Polish authorities. He complained about Poland's "grossest violations of the Vienna Convention on Consular relations".
The Polish Foreign Ministry condemned such statements and called on Russia to ensure the safety of all diplomats in accordance with the Vienna Convention.

Attempted assassination of Bulgarian Prosecutor General
An explosive device was detonated on the way of a motorcade with Bulgaria's chief prosecutor, Ivan Geshev. His deputy believes that the aim was to kill the prosecutor general.
A crater 30-40 cm deep and 3-4 meters in diameter was formed at the site of the explosion. According to preliminary findings, the bomb contained 3 kg of TNT and shrapnel that stuck in the trees opposite. According to media reports, the explosive device was detonated remotely.
To take Russian passports or not to take them?
The Minister for Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories of Ukraine, Iryna Vereshchuk, called on Ukrainians in the Russian-occupied territories not to take Russian passports. Thus, she disagreed with the Ombudsman, who suggested taking Russian citizenship to save lives.
The President's Office believes that both are right. The ombudsman said that a Russian passport should be taken as a last resort for security reasons, while the minister argues that one should not simply obtain a passport or help the enemy.
Train derails in Russia due to railroad bombing
In Russia's Bryansk Oblast, a freight train carrying fuel and construction materials was derailed by a railroad bombing. A fire broke out there. The locomotive and seven railroad cars derailed.
