Slovakia's ban on grain imports from Ukraine and the new acting director of the BES: last night's highlights

Slovakia has banned imports of Ukrainian grain but allowed its transit, and Eduard Fedorov has begun his term as director of the Bureau of Economic Security. Here is what you may have missed from the previous night.

Slovakia bans grain imports from Ukraine

At an online meeting on April 17, the Slovak government approved a ban on imports of grain and certain agricultural products from Ukraine but did not ban their transit through the country. According to the resolution, the ban will come into force on April 19.

Interim Minister of Agriculture Samuel Vlčan explained that the ban on imports of certain agricultural products from Ukraine is intended to protect Slovak farms and consumer health.

At the same time, he emphasized that the government did not impose a ban on transit for products from Ukraine through the “solidarity corridors”. These corridors bring Ukrainian products to ports and from there to markets outside the EU.

New acting director of the BES

On April 17, Eduard Fedorov took up his duties as director of the Bureau of Economic Security. Before that, he served as First Deputy Director of the BES.

From 2007 to 2022, Fedorov held operational and managerial positions in the Security Service of Ukraine. In 2021-22, he was the Deputy Head of the Kyiv Customs Department of the State Customs Service of Ukraine and acting head of this institution.

Fedorov was also the head of the Directorate of the Security Service of Ukraine in Sumy Oblast. And since 2023, he has served as the First Deputy Director of the Bureau of Economic Security.
