Truss becomes new British PM, ZNPP disconnected from Ukrainian grid: highlights of the day

British Foreign Minister Liz Truss was elected as the new head of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister, and Zaporizhzhya NPP is now completely disconnected from Ukraine's grid as a result of shelling by the occupiers. Here is our selection of today's key news.

Johnson's successor

British Foreign Minister Liz Truss was elected as the new leader of the Conservative Party, which automatically makes her the new Prime Minister . 81,326 members of the Conservative Party voted for the appointment of Liz Truss (57.4%). Her opponent — former finance chief Rishi Sunak — scored 60,399 votes.

On September 6, Truss will visit the Queen at Balmoral Estate, where she will be officially appointed as Prime Minister.  Truss will become the third woman to head the British government in history after Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May.

Johnson congratulated Truss on her victory, saying she had a plan to tackle the cost-of-living crisis and unify the Conservative Party.

Situation at ZNPP

As a result of the intensive Russian shelling around the Zaporizhzhia NPP and the resulting fire, the nuclear power plant was finally disconnected from the Ukrainian grid on September 5. The power transmission line of the Zaporizhzhia TPP — Ferrosplavna, i.e., the last line that connected the ZNPP/ZTPP junction with the energy system of Ukraine, was turned off.

Russia is shelling the territory of the nuclear power plant captured by it in order to blame Ukraine and discredit the Ukrainian army. The head of the state-owned NPP operator Energoatom, Petro Kotin, stressed that the occupiers want to use these methods to damage power lines and connect the ZNPP to their power grid.

At the same time, four out of six representatives of the inspection team of the International Atomic Energy Agency completed their work at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant today. Two experts are to continue working at the ZNPP on a permanent basis.

Shelling of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast

On September 5, the Russian occupying forces launched rocket attacks on the Kryvyi Rih district of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, as a result of which one person was killed and three others were injured. The shelling also destroyed the oil depot.

Military registration of women

The Parliamentary Committee on National Security supported the draft law on the voluntary enlistment of women in most specialties.  Now the draft law will be submitted for consideration and voting in the Verkhovna Rada.

Currently, women whose professions fall under the list of conscripts must register for military service by October 1.

European integration agreements

Ukraine signed five agreements with the EU at once, which will bring it closer to joining the bloc and will contribute to stability in the war against the Russian aggressor.  In particular, agreements were signed on the participation of Ukraine in the EU program "Digital Europe" (2021-2027), the participation of Ukraine in the EU program for cooperation in the customs sphere and the provision of budget support to Ukraine in the amount of 500 million euros.

"Referendum" put on pause

Russian occupiers paused preparations for the pseudo-referendum in Kherson Oblast due to the "security situation". The reason for this was the counteroffensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the region.

Air pollution in Kyiv

Smog and deterioration of air quality due to fires in the region were recorded in Kyiv this morning,. The elimination of peat fires near the village of Sosnivka of the Vyshhorod district and the village of Pershe Travnya of the Brovary district continues.
