UN Security Council meeting chaired by Lavrov and arrest of a National Guard officer: last night's highlights
A National Guard officer suspected of beating a soldier was placed under nightly house arrest, and at a UN Security Council meeting chaired by Lavrov, the Secretary General and ambassadors of three countries condemned the Russian invasion. Here is what you may have missed from the previous night.
UN Security Council meeting
A meeting of the UN Security Council was held in New York under the chairmanship of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and representatives from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland condemned the Russian invasion.
In his speech, Lavrov said that the UN is “experiencing a deep crisis” and blamed the United States and Western countries for this.
According to Lavrov, the United States and its allies “refuse diplomacy and demand a settlement on the battlefield”. He also accused NATO of “brazenly absorbing” territories where “Russia's vital interests exist and will exist”.
Arrest for National Guard officer
The Ivano-Frankivsk City Court has placed an officer of a National Guard unit under nightly house arrest, who is suspected of abusing a subordinate soldier.
The State Bureau of Investigation requested a different measure of restraint – detention with the possibility of bail in the amount of UAH 800,000.
Situation in Kherson Oblast
Over the past 3 days, the Defense Forces have been demonstrating “quite powerful results of combat operations” in the southern sector. Every day Ukrainian defenders manage to destroy 13 to 20 units of occupiers' equipment, said Natalia Humeniuk, head of the press center of the Southern Defense Forces of Ukraine.
According to her, the Defense Forces are clearing the front line of the left bank of the Dnipro River in counter-battery mode. The military are destroying artillery pieces, tanks, armored vehicles, and air defense systems of the Russians. She once again called for information silence.
