What UN Can Do To Stop War In Ukraine

Hromadske’s Nataliya Gumenyuk spoke to the Ukrainian Ambassador to the United Nations, Yuriy Sergeyev
Hromadske’s Nataliya Gumenyuk spoke to the Ukrainian Ambassador to the United Nations, Yuriy Sergeyev, about Ukraine’s strategy within the UN Security Council. Sergeyev told Hromadske that Ukraine’s aim is to force Russia into observing its own commitments through maintaining the “same high level of support” from other members of the Security Council over the last. He is under no illusions that the Security Council will agree on any kind of resolution on Ukraine because of Russia’s vetoing power. He welcomed the UN agencies continuing work in Ukraine, but warned that Ukraine must ensure that in the event of any UN peacekeeping force being introduced, it will not be an all-Russian peacekeeping force, as was the case in Abkhazia. Sergeyev also expressed his confidence in Ukraine obtaining membership of the Security Council as well as having the UN recognize the self-proclaimed Luhansk People’s Republic and the Donetsk People’s Republic as 'terrorist organisations'.
