Pre-trial restraint for Farion's murder suspect, a strike on Saki and the start of the Olympics: highlights for July 26

An 18-year-old boy suspected of murdering Irina Farion has been imposed a pre-trial restraint. The Ukrainian military strikes at the Saki airfield in temporarily occupied Crimea. The 2024 Olympic Games have started in Paris. We have collected the main news for July 26, 2024.

Pre-trial restraint for suspect in Farion's murder

Lviv's Halytskyi District Court has imposed a pre-trial restraint on an 18-year-old boy suspected of killing Iryna Farion: he was sent to a Lviv pre-trial detention center for 60 days without bail. He does not admit his guilt and says that he “did nothing to Farion”.

Earlier, the guy, who was detained the day before, was notified of suspicion of premeditated murder (Part 1 of Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

Before the court hearing, a preventive measure was imposed on the suspect, law enforcement officers held a briefing during which they said that the linguist was killed with a non-combat round — the gun used to shoot the woman has not yet been found.

According to Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko, the boy chose Farion as his victim because she was “the most defenseless”. According to the Interior Minister, MP Maksym Buzhanskyi was also on the list of potential victims of the suspect.

Strike on the Saki airfield

On the night of July 26, the Ukrainian military struck the Saki airfield in temporarily occupied Crimea.

The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces is still clarifying information about the consequences of the strike. However, the Russian Telegram channel Astra, citing sources, wrote that the strike hit an ammunition depot at the airfield and caused a fire. Two servicemen were wounded — they sustained shrapnel wounds.

Opening of the Olympics

The opening ceremony of this year's Summer Olympics took place in Paris — they will run from July 26 to August 11, 2024. This year, for the first time, the ceremony is being held on the water instead of at a stadium.

Tennis player Elina Svitolina and swimmer Mykhailo Romanchuk will carry the Ukrainian flag at the ceremony.

This year, Ukraine is represented by 140 athletes in all sports except for the games (they failed to obtain licenses). This number of athletes is the smallest in the history of Ukrainians at the Olympic Games.

Results of the inspection of the 59th brigade

The inspection of the 59th Separate Motorized Infantry Brigade named after Yakiv Handziuk has been completed after paramedic Kateryna Polishchuk (Ptashka) publicly criticized the actions of the brigade commander.

They did not find any cases of criminal orders, but they did find some facts of managerial decisions and factors that could negatively affect the course of combat missions of the military unit.

Individual officials from the brigade command were brought to justice.

First tranche from frozen Russian assets

The European Commission is transferring 1.5 billion euros from frozen Russian assets to Ukraine's defense and reconstruction. This is the first such tranche.

The money will be transferred through the European Peace Facility and the Ukraine Facility program to support Ukraine's military capabilities and to support the country's reconstruction.

Ukrainian titanium exported to Russia

The sanctioned Russian oligarch Mikhail Shelkov is suspected of organizing the supply of Ukrainian titanium to Russia. This strategic product was supplied to companies in the Russian military sector.

Law enforcement officials note that the raw materials were exported from the Demurinsky mining and processing plant in the Dnipropetrovsk region. According to the investigation, this led to the understatement of the company's profits and, accordingly, the non-payment of almost UAH 18.5 million in taxes.
