Mayor of Dniprorudne tortured in Russian captivity. His body transferred during last exchange
Russians captured and tortured the mayor of the town of Dniprorudne, in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, Yevheniy Matveyev, reported regional governor Ivan Fedorov.
Matveyev was in captivity for 2 years and 8 months, and the Russians captured Dniprorudne at the end of February 2022. Fedorov said that the Russians tortured the official, and his body was handed over during the last exchange on November 29.
"Yevheniy Serhiyovych was a true patriot, not indifferent to the fate of his country and his community. Always worked with people and for people, he listened, and helped everyone who needed it. He was strong-willed and principled.
During the occupation, he did not leave the town or the people, he did everything to ensure the life of the community, constantly informed the population about the course of events and supported them," Fedorov said.
During the last exchange of bodies on November 29, 502 fallen soldiers were returned to the territory controlled by Ukraine. Among them were:
- 397 Ukrainian soldiers — from the Donetsk axis;
- 24 — from the Luhansk axis;
- 64 — from the Zaporizhzia axis;
- 17 — from morgues in the Russian Federation.
