Searches underway at ex-border agency chief Deyneko in cigarette smuggling probe

Anti-corruption authorities are conducting searches at the residence of the former head of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, Serhiy Deyneko, Ukrainska Pravda reports, citing sources.

According to the outlet, the searches relate to a case involving improper benefits connected to cigarette smuggling.

In early January, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy dismissed Deyneko from the post of head of the State Border Guard Service. Before that, he said that under his leadership the service “had made significant progress in development and strengthening,” but emphasized the need to change approaches in the agency’s work.

Later, it was reported that Deyneko would become an adviser to the minister of internal affairs, and after a short rehabilitation he would be appointed commander of a combat unit of the State Border Guard Service.

Zelenskyy appointed Deyneko’s deputy, Major General Valeriy Vavryniuk, as acting head of the State Border Guard Service.
