River home to 500 crocodiles approved as 2032 Olympic rowing venue
A river in Australia that is home to around 500 saltwater crocodiles has been approved to host rowing and canoe sprint events at the 2032 Brisbane Olympics and Paralympics.
The Fitzroy River course in Rockhampton, Queensland, passed an independent technical assessment examining weather, water levels and flood risks.
There was, however, one thing the assessment did not consider: the crocodiles.
Brisbane 2032 President Andrew Liveris previously dismissed concerns about the reptiles.
“There are sharks in the ocean and we're still surfing,” he said last year. “It's a can do, not a can't do.”
Saltwater crocodiles, known in Australia as “salties,” can grow to more than six meters (20 feet) long.
