Zelenskyy appoints Sviatoslav Zaiets commander of Ukraine's Ground Forces
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appointed Brig. Gen. Sviatoslav Zaiets as commander of Ukraine's Ground Forces, according to a presidential decree published on Sept. 2.
Zaiets replaces Brig. Gen. Hennadii Shapovalov, who had led the Ground Forces since June 2025.
Zaiets previously commanded Ukraine's 20th Army Corps, which is defending Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. A former Air Assault Forces officer, he has focused heavily on digitalizing battlefield operations and expanding the use of unmanned systems.
Under Zaiets, all brigades of the 20th Army Corps were integrated into Mission Control, Ukraine's digital system for managing and analyzing drone operations in real time.
His appointment comes as part of a broader reshuffle of Ukraine's military command structure. hromadske previously reported that Zaiets had been offered the Ground Forces post as part of changes initiated by Mykhailo Drapatyi.
