Ukraine and United States sign 10-year security agreement

Presidents of Ukraine and the United States Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Joseph Biden signed a bilateral security agreement for 10 years. It should also be a step for possible membership of Ukraine in NATO, Reuters reports.

The agreement provides that in the event of a new armed attack on Ukraine or such a threat, high-ranking officials of the two countries will meet within 24 hours for consultations.

In addition, the United States confirmed its support for Ukraine's defense of its sovereignty and territorial integrity. They promised to continue to provide long-term material support, training and consulting, intelligence, defense-industrial, institutional and other assistance for the development of Ukrainian security and defense forces.

The parties also recognized the agreement as a step towards possible membership of Ukraine in NATO.

Earlier, the Washington Post, with reference to unnamed US officials, wrote that Donald Trump, if he wins the elections, will be able to withdraw from the security agreement that Biden signed with Ukraine.

Security agreement with the USA

In August 2023, Ukraine began negotiations with the United States on a bilateral agreement on the provision of security guarantees, as stipulated in the Joint Declaration on Support for Ukraine, which was agreed a month earlier at the NATO Summit in Vilnius by the leaders of the Group of Seven.

These security guarantees will strengthen Ukraine's progress towards future membership in the Euro-Atlantic community, including the EU and NATO, which is the ultimate goal and the most reliable security guarantee.

In April 2024, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the goal was to make the agreement with the USA the "most powerful" of all that Ukraine signed with other partners.

In total, as of June 13, 15 more countries have signed bilateral agreements with Ukraine: Germany, Denmark, France, Italy, Canada, the Netherlands, Finland, Latvia, Spain, Belgium, Portugal, Sweden, Iceland, Norway, and Japan.
