Trump-Biden debate, return of Dzhelyal from captivity, missile attack on Dnipro: June 28 highlights
US President Joe Biden and his opponent in the presidential elections, Donald Trump, held a debate. Ukraine was able to return home 10 civilians from Russian captivity. Russia hit a high-rise building in Dnipro. We collected the main news for June 28.
The debate between Biden and Trump
US Democratic incumbent Joe Biden and Republican rival Donald Trump held their first debate since 2020, exchanging insults and jeers. The American media estimated that Biden had an uncertain look and showed an "unstable game", while Trump voiced many fakes.
After that, the media reported that the US Democratic Party was discussing the possible replacement of Biden with another candidate, but Biden’s representatives assured that the current president would not drop out of the election race.
Missile attack on Dnipro
In the evening, Russia hit a high-rise building in Dnipro. Four floors were destroyed there.
One person was killed, and 12 were injured, including a seven-month-old baby who was poisoned by combustion products.
Return of Dzhelyal and other captured civilians
Ukraine was able to return home 10 civilians from Russian captivity. In particular, the deputy chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, Nariman Dzhelyal, who was captured in Crimea back in 2021, and two priests of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, who were kidnapped by the Russians in Berdyansk for resisting the occupation.
Ukrainian defenders shot down a Russian Su-25 in Donetsk Oblast
The 31st military brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine shot down a Russian Su-25 attack aircraft in Donetsk Oblast.
In total, since the beginning of 2024, the Ukrainian Defense Forces have managed to destroy more than 30 different Russian warplanes. 12 Russian Su-34s were shot down in Luhansk Oblast alone.
Russia destroyed the Burshtyn TPP in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast
The Russian military attacked the Burshtyn Thermal Power Plant in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast 12 times. It is not subject to restoration.
The regional authorities appealed to the government to provide the Burshtyn Territorial Community with six boiler houses, which will cover the needs of social facilities and the population. International donors will also be asked for generators.
A detailed plan for the end of the war from Ukraine
By the end of 2024, Ukraine aims to develop a clear and detailed plan for ending the war with Russia.
"It is very important for us to show a plan to end the war that will be supported by the majority of the world. This is the diplomatic path we are working on," President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
Military aid from Finland
The Finnish government has decided to give Ukraine the 24th package of military aid to repel the Russian invasion — this time for 159 million euros.
The country has traditionally not disclosed the contents of the new aid package and the timing of its delivery.
PM Shmyhal revealed how much Ukraine will receive for defense under security agreements
Ukraine has already signed 20 security agreements with partners, in particular with the European Union and the United States. According to these agreements, during the next four years, international partners plan to provide Ukraine with total military support worth $60 billion annually.
WSJ claims that Russian civil servants paid for pilot Kuzminov's murder
