Assassination attempt on Trump, occupation of Urozhayne, negotiations on Gripen fighters: July 14 highlights

US presidential candidate Donald Trump was shot at during a campaign rally. The Russian military completely occupied the village of Urozhayne in Donetsk Oblast. Ukraine is negotiating with Sweden regarding the transfer of Saab JAS-39 Gripen fighters. We collected the main news for July 14.

Assassination attempt on Trump

On the evening of July 13, Donald Trump was shot at during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The bullet pierced the upper part of his ear, as a result of which a trickle of blood could be seen on the politician's face.

The attacker killed one spectator at the rally. Two more were seriously injured and were transported to the hospital by helicopter. The shooter himself was shot by a member of the Secret Service.

The FBI said the shooting was being investigated as attempted murder.

Occupation of Urozhayne

On July 14, the Russian military completely occupied the village of Urozhayne in Donetsk Oblast, interlocutors in the unit that defends this direction confirmed in a comment to hromadske.

Urozhayne is located in the Volnovakha district of Donetsk Oblast. The enemy occupied this village in March 2022. During the summer counter-offensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, in August 2023, this settlement was liberated by the fighters of the 35th Separate Marine Brigade.

Ukraine discussing the transfer of Gripen fighters

Ukraine is negotiating with Sweden regarding the transfer of Saab JAS-39 Gripen fighter jets, Deputy Head of the Office of the President Ihor Zhovkva said.

Earlier, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sweden, Tobias Billström, stated that Ukraine independently decided to suspend the process of transferring Gripen fighters. According to him, Ukraine has come to the conclusion that having two fighter systems at the same time — both F-16 and Gripen — is "too much."

Ptashka asks to check the commander of the 59th brigade

Volunteer paramedic Kateryna “Ptashka” Polishchuk, who defended Azovstal in Mariupol, called on Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as the Supreme Commander-in-Chief, to conduct an audit of the actions of the commander of the 59th Separate Motorized Infantry Brigade.

She stated the facts of "criminal orders", "deliberate negligence", "neglect of life and health of personnel" and others.

The officer of the 59th brigade, Serhiy Tsehotskyi, in a comment to hromadske, stated that Kateryna Polishchuk did not serve in the brigade, but cooperated with it as a volunteer. According to him, if he had witnessed what Ptashka was describing, he would have reacted to it.

The head of the ESBU detectives was involved in a double-traffic accident

Oleksandr Tkachuk, head of detectives of the Economic Security Bureau, was involved in a double traffic accident in Kyiv, three law enforcement sources said.

The accident occurred on the Stolychne highway in Kyiv. It was preliminarily established that Dodge and VAZ cars collided first. When the drivers and passengers of the cars got out and were near the scene of the accident, a Toyota, driven by Tkachuk, according to sources, hit the Dodge.

Ministry of Defense: military medical commission should not be required to update data

It is not required to pass a military medical commission when updating military registration data, the Ministry of Defense said.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, July 16, the 60-day period for updating military registration data ends, which means that those who have not done so face fines of 17,000 hryvnias ($415), and for repeated violations - 25,500 hryvnias ($622).

Zelenskyy announced new security agreements

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced bilateral security agreements with the Czech Republic, Slovenia, and Ireland.

As of July 14, 2024, Ukraine has already concluded 23 agreements, including seven with the countries of the Group of Seven.

The Ukrainian economy grew

Over the past six months, the economy of Ukraine has grown by 4.1%, despite negative factors.

The main factors of economic growth are:

  • high rates of export of products of the mining and metallurgical complex;
  • early start of harvesting of winter crops;
  • stable operation of the Ukrainian maritime corridor.

Russia confirms the use of FAB-3000 bombs

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation for the first time demonstrated the use of the FAB-3000 aerial bomb, the production of which was resumed in Russia. They claim that they allegedly hit the point of temporary deployment of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that over the past week, the Russians used more than 700 guided aerial bombs, more than 170 attack drones, and about 80 missiles to attack Ukraine.

March of memory of the killed Ukrainian athletes

A march was held in Paris in memory of Ukrainian athletes killed by the Russian troops. Soon, the Olympic Games will start in the capital of France, in which the dead could have taken part.

More than 1,000 people took part in the July 13 march, which marched from Place Pantheon to Place Saint-Michel in the center of Paris. To honor the 488 Ukrainian athletes who were killed by the Russian military, the participants of the march wore T-shirts with the names of the dead.
