Attempt on Farion, large-scale Windows glitch and shelling of Mykolaiv: highlights for July 19

Attempt on Farion's life
In Lviv, a linguist and former MP Iryna Farion was shot at. She is currently in critical condition in intensive care.
At the same time, an operation to detain the attacker is underway. Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko and Head of the Security Service of Ukraine Vasyl Maliuk promptly reported to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the search for the attacker of Iryna Farion.
The case was classified as an attempted murder.
Shelling
Russian troops opened fire on Mykolaiv, hitting a residential area. Three people were reported dead, including a child, and 15 more were injured. The Russians hit a playground near an ordinary residential building.
The Russian military also hit the central part of the city of Chuhuiv in the Kharkiv region. Nine people, including a 14-year-old boy, were injured in the strike.
Ukrainian anti-aircraft gunners shoot down Su-25
The Ukrainian military shot down another Russian Su-25 aircraft in the Pokrovsk direction in Donetsk region. The attack aircraft, which was trying to fire at the positions of the Defense Forces, was destroyed by anti-aircraft gunners from the separate mechanized brigade named after Lieutenant General Marko Bezruchko.
Global Windows glitch
Many countries around the world have reported problems with airports caused by a massive technical failure. Problems are also reported in the work of TV channels, train stations, stock exchanges, and other companies.
The head of CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity company, said that the global outage on July 19 was caused by a Windows update. He dismissed speculation of a security incident or cyberattack.
Zelenskyy may arrange a conversation with Trump
According to CNN and Reuters, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will have a phone conversation with US presidential candidate Donald Trump. This will be the first time since the American politician's previous presidential term ended in 2021.
The conversation between the two will take place amid concerns about Trump's policy on the war in Ukraine if he wins the presidential election in November.
London promises to double aid to Ukraine
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with the newly appointed British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer. The latter said that London would “redouble its efforts” to support the country.
For his part, Zelenskyy asked Starmer to “demonstrate leadership” and help with Ukraine's “long-range capabilities”.
In addition, Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov and British Defense Minister John Healey signed an agreement between the governments on official loan support for the development of Ukraine's defense capabilities.
European Commission evaluates draft law on “payoff” for corruption
The European Commission has already assessed the draft law on the possibility of entering into a plea bargain with the investigation of corruption crimes. The document is in line with international practice.
Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olha Stefanishyna noted that the draft law will be finalized if there are comments on it, and also called for “not to succumb to manipulation”.
Another MP leaves the Servant of the People faction
MP Yulia Yatsyk has left the Servant of the People parliamentary faction. She had already submitted her resignation twice before, but only this time her withdrawal was approved.
Yatsyk left the party of the same name back in 2022.
