Special Operations Forces showed how they repelled an over 8-hour assault by North Korean troops. Over 20 enemy soldiers were destroyed

Soldiers of the 8th Regiment of the Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine engaged in another battle with North Korean soldiers in Russia’s Kursk Oblast. It lasted for more than eight hours, reported the SOF.

The advance of North Korean soldiers was held back with the help of small arms and grenade launchers. Snipers were also employed.

"The operators decided to exfiltrate — a military tactic for quickly removing a group from the battlefield to a safe place. The fighters went out in two Humvees in a coordinated manner," the Special Operations Forces said.

North Korean troops at war against Ukraine

In October 2024, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy first reported that he had received information about Russia training two units of North Korean military personnel, each with 6,000 people.

Subsequently, Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence confirmed the arrival of the first North Korean units in Kursk Oblast. In November last year, the first losses among North Koreans in battles in Kursk Oblast of the Russian Federation were reported.

On January 11, it was reported that Ukrainian fighters had captured the first two North Korean soldiers in Russia’s Kursk Oblast. They were wounded but survived. They were taken to Kyiv, where SBU investigators are talking to them.

After that, Ukraine announced that it was ready to hand over its soldiers to North Korea if the country helped organize an exchange for Ukrainian fighters held by Russia.
