Russian advance in Sumy Oblast border area halted, says Ukraine’s army chief
Ukrainian forces successfully stopped Russian troop advances in Sumy Oblast’s border area this week, Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine’s Armed Forces Oleksandr Syrskyi reported on Telegram.
The frontline in this direction has been stabilized, with Ukrainian units employing active defense tactics and reclaiming occupied territories in certain areas, he added.
Ukrainian forces have pinned down approximately 50,000 Russian troops, including elite air assault (VDV) and marine brigades, in the Pivnichnoslobozhanskyi and Kursk sectors.
“Our offensive actions in the Glushkovo district of Russia’s Kursk Oblast forced the enemy to divert some forces to protect their territory, significantly reducing the offensive capabilities of their main grouping in the Sumy sector,” he stated.
To bolster defenses, a special group has been established to oversee Sumy Oblast’s protection, tasked with strengthening fortifications and expanding engineering and defensive barriers, General Syrskyi added.
A designated official has also been appointed to coordinate the defense preparations of Sumy Oblast’s settlements and territorial communities, focusing on fortifying potential attack routes.
