Death toll in Dnipro rises to 8 after repeat Russian strike during rescue operation

A Russian follow-up strike on Dnipro killed a rescuer while emergency crews were helping victims and clearing the aftermath of the overnight attack, Ukraine’s State Emergency Service reported.

Units had arrived after the initial strike to assist residents and deal with the damage when Russian forces launched another attack on the city.

The rescuer was killed in that second strike, the agency said.

Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko later said the victim was Major Anton Yarmolenko, the deputy chief of the fire and rescue unit. He was on his way to respond to the call at the time of the attack.

Separately, regional governor Oleksandr Hanzha said a boy born in 2023 was also killed in the June 2 attack on Dnipro. His body was pulled from the rubble of a damaged four-story building struck overnight.

Hanzha said the death toll from the Russian strike on Dnipro had risen to eight.

Earlier reports said Russian strikes in the city partially destroyed apartment buildings and damaged a business, a fire station and garages, while vehicles were destroyed.

A total of 33 people were injured, including a 22-year-old man and a 71-year-old woman in serious condition. 24 people were hospitalized in moderate condition, including a 16-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl.
