Drones target St. Petersburg as economic forum opens, oil terminal reportedly burning

Drones attacked St. Petersburg overnight into Wednesday, with reports suggesting that the St. Petersburg Oil Terminal, one of the largest oil transfer complexes in northwestern Russia, was among the targets.

The attack on the region was reported by Alexander Drozdenko, governor of Russia’s Leningrad Oblast.

He said that as of 7 a.m., 50 drones had been shot down over the region. He did not provide details about the consequences of the attack.

Telegram channels, citing local residents, reported that the St. Petersburg Oil Terminal had come under attack.

The Russian Telegram channel Astra said the terminal is the largest oil transshipment complex in northwestern Russia.

According to Astra, the 37-hectare site includes 21 tanks for storing light and dark petroleum products. The oil terminal has been designated an enterprise of strategic importance for Russia’s security.

June 3 also marks the opening day of the economic forum in St. Petersburg, which is scheduled to run through June 6. According to Astra, the distance from the St. Petersburg Oil Terminal to Expoforum, where the event is being held, is about 17 kilometers, or roughly 10.5 miles.
