Ukrainian Special Operations Forces hit Sevastopol power plant supplying nearly half of Crimea
Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces struck the Balaklava thermal power plant in occupied Sevastopol, a facility that allegedly generates nearly half of the electricity used on the Crimean peninsula, as reported by the press service of the Special Operations Forces.
The plant was hit overnight into July 14.
The operation involved members of the SOF Resistance Movement working together with deep-strike units, the statement said.
According to the military, the attack damaged the plant’s turbine hall, including a workshop containing the cooling system for one of the turbines, a Siemens SGT5-2000E. If the pumping equipment was damaged, repairs could reportedly take from two to five months.
“The Balaklava thermal power plant is the energy backbone of the peninsula. Together with the Tavriya thermal power plant in Simferopol, the station provides about 90% of Crimea’s electricity consumption. These are the two pillars of the peninsula’s own electricity generation,” the SOF said.
The military added that strikes on such facilities affect both Russia’s offensive and defensive capabilities.
