Russian missiles hit Odesa, glide bombs strike Sumy in night of attacks across Ukraine

Russia attacked several regions of Ukraine from the evening of July 16 into the early hours of July 17, killing civilians in Odesa and striking Sumy with guided bombs, according to local officials.

Russia launched one Kh-31P anti-radiation missile, seven guided air-launched missiles and 130 drones. Ukrainian air defenses shot down five of the guided missiles and 115 drones, Ukraine’s Air Force said.

In Odesa, city military administration head Serhiy Lysak said cleanup operations were still underway as of 7 a.m.

Russian forces struck the city’s Khadzhybeyskyi district. Two civilians were killed when a residential building was hit, and eight people were injured.

In total, 11 residential buildings, a religious institution, a preschool, cars, and other civilian infrastructure were damaged in the city.

At about 3 a.m., Russian forces also attacked Sumy, carrying out five strikes with guided bombs on the city center and outskirts, acting Mayor Artem Kobzar said.

As a result, more than 100 windows were blown out in an apartment building. Emergency services were working at the scene, and a response headquarters had been set up.

In Kharkiv Oblast, the Kholodnohirskyi district came under Russian attack on the evening of July 15. A 50-year-old man was injured in a drone strike, regional governor Oleg Synegubov said.

Russian drones also attacked the Cherkasy and Dnipropetrovsk oblasts overnight. Regional administration heads Ihor Taburets and Oleksandr Hanzha reported no casualties.
