UNESCO adds Tauric Chersonese in Crimea to list of World Heritage in Danger
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has added the Tauric Chersonese and its Chora in Crimea to the List of World Heritage in Danger, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said.
According to Sybiha, the decision was taken today during the 48th session of UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee.
“We welcome this decision. The property, located in Ukrainian Crimea, which is temporarily occupied by Russia, is under constant threat and is being damaged and ruined by Russian occupation authorities,” Sybiha wrote.
Placement on the danger list means the site is threatened with destruction or requires urgent rescue work and special attention from the international community. The status can make it possible to draw funding from special restoration funds, bring in international experts to plan conservation work and attract the attention of foreign governments.
Tauric Chersonese is an architectural and archaeological complex of an ancient city located in occupied Sevastopol. It was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2013.
