Zelensky imposes new sanctions on Russia’s defense industry, collaborators
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has signed several new packages of sanctions targeting Russia’s defense industry, collaborators in Russian-occupied Ukrainian territories, and former Ukrainian public figures who now live in Europe but maintain ties with Russia.
Zelensky announced the measures on August 20.
The sanctions cover companies supporting Russia’s war effort as well as individuals who continue to support Moscow amid its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
“Today I signed decrees on new sanctions - several packages. They concern collaborators in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine and former Ukrainian figures who are now somewhere in Europe, but whose documents, connections and hearts remain in Russia,” Zelensky said.
He said Ukraine would continue its sanctions efforts, with a particular focus on aligning Ukrainian restrictions with those imposed by international partners.
Earlier in August, Zelensky ordered officials to prepare what he called a “special sanctions operation” aimed at significantly restricting Russia’s defense industry.
At the time, he said Russian missiles and drones rely on critical foreign-made components, while Russian arms manufacturers also depend on machinery and technologies that Moscow cannot produce independently.
