Ukraine says drones hit Russian Kalibr missile carrier Admiral Essen in Novorossiysk

Ukrainian drones struck the Russian frigate Admiral Essen, a carrier of Kalibr cruise missiles, during an overnight attack on the Novorossiysk naval base, Ukraine's military intelligence said on Sept. 9.

According to the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine, the strike caused a fire on the frigate's superstructure. The agency did not specify the extent of the damage.

The Admiral Essen is a Project 11356 frigate capable of carrying Kalibr cruise missiles, which Russia has used in attacks against Ukraine.

Ukrainian forces also struck infrastructure at the Novorossiysk naval base, the intelligence agency said.

Earlier on Sept. 9, Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces said their drones had destroyed a Russian Su-33 carrier-based fighter jet, a Mi-8 helicopter and two radar systems in Anapa. They also reported strikes on multiple vessels at the Novorossiysk naval base and 13 Russian shadow fleet vessels in the Black Sea.
