Russian drone hits Kyiv–Warsaw train near Polish border as European delegation evacuated
A Russian drone struck the locomotive of a Kyiv–Warsaw passenger train just two kilometers from the Polish border on Sunday, while another train carrying former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and senior European officials was evacuated during the attack.
No one was injured in the strike on the Kyiv-Warsaw train. Ukrainian Railways said a monitoring team had warned the crew of the threat in advance.
Russia also attacked an area near the Yahodyn–Dorohusk international border crossing. Debris from a drone caused a fire at a gas station and damaged several trucks parked nearby, according to Ukrainian officials. Border operations were suspended during the air raid alert but later resumed normally.
Separately, a chartered train carrying a large European delegation was stopped near the Polish border at around 5 a.m. because of the drone threat, according to Spiegel. Some passengers were evacuated.
The train was carrying Johnson as well as Günter Sautter, a foreign and security policy adviser to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, security advisers from other European governments, Bundestag lawmakers, diplomats and academics.
The delegation was returning from Kyiv, where European security advisers had held talks with Ukrainian officials and attended the Yalta European Strategy conference.
Ukrainian presidential communications adviser Dmytro Lytvyn said Ukrainian Railways confirmed that the delegation’s train had passed one section of the route shortly before a Russian drone struck another train there.
Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski described the attack as another escalation by Russia.
“Russian terrorism is not just knocking on the door, it’s inside the house,” Sikorski said. “Russian hybrid war is kinetic. It’s not just some nuisance on the internet, it’s not just disinformation, it’s not just spying.”
Sikorski pointed to previous cases of suspected Russian sabotage and other hostile activity in European countries.
“I understand that nobody died this morning in that particular attack on the border, but it could easily have happened,” he said.
