Russia launches 172 drones at Ukraine, injuring five in Zaporizhzhia
Russia launched 172 drones at Ukraine overnight and into the morning of Sept. 21, striking multiple locations across the country and injuring at least five people in Zaporizhzhia, Ukrainian authorities said.
Ukraine's Air Force said Russia launched 172 Shahed attack drones, Gerbera drones, decoys and other unmanned aircraft beginning at 6 p.m. on Sept. 20. Sixty-four of the drones were jet-powered.
As of 8 a.m., Ukrainian air defenses had shot down or suppressed 147 drones as well as one Banderol/Dan-T unmanned aircraft, according to preliminary figures.
The Air Force recorded strikes at 14 locations and debris from intercepted drones falling at four more.
The attack was still underway as of 8 a.m., with Russian drones remaining in Ukrainian airspace.
In Zaporizhzhia, two nine-story apartment buildings were hit, causing fires, according to regional authorities and Ukraine's State Emergency Service.
A shopping mall and a university building also caught fire following Russian strikes.
Five people were injured. Emergency workers rescued five people and evacuated another 14 from damaged buildings.
Russia also attacked Sumy, where drones struck near an apartment building, killing a woman and injuring a man, according to the State Emergency Service.
An educational facility in the city was also damaged in airstrikes.
