Ukraine plans 840 mobile shelters along school bus routes in frontline regions
Ukraine plans to install 840 mobile shelters along school bus routes in six frontline regions as part of an effort to protect children traveling to and from school.
The shelters are planned for the Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, Kharkiv, Kherson and Chernihiv regions, Ukraine’s Ministry for Communities and Territories said.
Deputy Minister Artem Husak presented the project at a meeting of the Shelter Coalition for Ukraine, an international initiative that brings together governments and financial institutions to fund and develop civilian protection infrastructure.
Ukrainian donor regions have already joined the project, but additional international funding is needed to cover all 840 shelters, according to the ministry.
“It is fundamentally important for us that children are protected not only at school, but also on their way there,” Husak said.
Separately, the European Union announced €10 million ($11.7 million) in funding for shelters across Ukraine. Other members of the coalition are considering additional financial support.
The Shelter Coalition was launched by Ukraine and Finland in May 2025. Its members also include the EU, Lithuania, Belgium, Ireland, Sweden, Switzerland and the European Investment Bank.
