Ukraine says Neptune missiles hit six Russian Su-34 bombers at airfield
Ukraine's Navy said it struck six Russian Su-34M fighter-bombers at the Borisoglebsk military airfield in Russia's Voronezh Oblast overnight on October 15.
The strike was carried out using Ukraine's domestically developed Neptune coastal missile system, the Navy said.
According to the Ukrainian military, the attack also destroyed aircraft maintenance and support equipment, triggering secondary explosions and a fire at the airfield.
The Navy said Su-34M aircraft are among Russia's primary platforms for launching guided aerial bombs against Ukrainian frontline positions and nearby communities.
The aircraft can carry multiple guided and conventional bombs as well as various types of missiles.
Ukrainian officials said damaging the bombers could weaken Russia's tactical aviation capabilities and reduce the intensity of airstrikes along affected sections of the front.
The reported damage and number of aircraft hit have not been independently verified.
