Zelensky's press conference, Ukraine introduces “work or fight” principle: August 27 highlights

Ukraine’s government is considering measures based on the “work or fight” principle which would bring the labor market out of the shadows. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a press conference to talk about the situation at the frontline and Ukraine's new defense developments. Here are the main news for August 27, 2024.

“Work or fight” principle

Ukraine’s Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said that the government is considering a number of measures based on the “work or fight” principle, which is aimed at bringing people who avoid tax paying out of the shadows.

The de-shadowing measures include the return of Ukrainians from abroad to work and pay taxes in Ukraine.

In addition, Shmyhal said that Ukraine’s total budget deficit for 2025 is $35 billion. Assistance from partners will cover $20 billion, but the gap of $15 billion remains.

Zelenskyy’s press conference

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a press conference where he announced that Ukraine successfully tested its first ballistic missile. So far, the President hasn't disclosed any other details about it.

In addition, the president called Ukraine's operation in Russia’s Kursk region a defensive one, because, according to him, Ukraine does not need other people's land.

Zelenskyy also said that Ukraine used Western F-16 fighter aircraft to repel a massive Russian drone and missile attack on 26 August. The jets helped to down some missiles.

Ukrainian MP Dmytruk may be deprived of his mandate

Controversial Ukrainian MP Artem Dmytruk, who recently fled from Ukraine, may be deprived of his MP status under the Constitution, according to the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk.

Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin said if Dmytruk does not return voluntarily, Ukraine will take all legal measures to return him.

Zhadan donates UAH 1 million to volunteers

Famous Ukrainian writer and musician Serhiy Zhadan has joined the filming of an advert for the McDonald's food chain. He will donate UAH 1 million of his fee to volunteer work.

Ukraine to build another nuclear power plant 

Ukraine to build another nuclear power plant with four power units in the town of Orbita in the Cherkasy region.

President of Ukraine's state nuclear company Energoatom, Petro Kotin says that for this purpose, the town of Orbita in the Cherkasy region will be revived and transformed into one of the most modern cities “like Netishyn, Yuzhnoukrainsk or Varash”, where other Ukrainian nuclear power plants are located.

The construction of the new NPP will take place within the framework of Ukraine's energy strategy until 2050.
