Ukraine reaches winter gas storage target a month early, energy minister says

Ukraine has accumulated 14.6 billion cubic meters of natural gas in underground storage, reaching its target for the 2026-2027 heating season a month ahead of schedule, Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal said on Aug. 28.

“In terms of gas reserves, we are ready for the 2026-2027 autumn-winter period,” Shmyhal said, adding that preparations continue in other areas.

Ukraine is preparing for another winter under the threat of Russian attacks on its energy infrastructure. Shmyhal said earlier that around 40 countries were helping with preparations, with nearly €507 million raised for the Ukraine Energy Support Fund since the beginning of the year.
