Germany to provide additional €250 million for Ukraine’s energy sector ahead of winter
Germany will provide an additional €250 million ($291 million) to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund as the country prepares its power system for another winter of Russian attacks, Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal said.
The new contribution will bring Germany’s total financial support through the fund to €807 million ($939 million), making it the fund’s largest donor, according to Shmyhal.
International partners have contributed more than €2.4 billion ($2.8 billion) to the fund overall.
Shmyhal said Ukraine’s energy companies continue to face significant needs as Russia repeatedly targets the country’s energy infrastructure.
“This support is extremely important for strengthening the resilience of Ukraine’s energy sector ahead of winter,” he said, thanking the German government and Economy and Energy Minister Katherina Reiche.
Around 40 countries are helping Ukraine prepare its energy system for winter, according to Shmyhal. In addition to financial assistance, international partners have delivered around 6,000 metric tons of energy equipment to Ukrainian regions and communities this year.
