Magazine returned to US library 132 years late - just in time for fine amnesty
A magazine borrowed from a New Hampshire library in 1894 has finally been returned - 48,220 days overdue.
The September 1894 issue of The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine was brought back to Concord Public Library last week after the library announced a year-long amnesty on overdue fines.
Without the amnesty, the late fee would have reached $12,055.
The man who returned it, identified only as John, said the magazine had been “hanging around” his home for decades and he had no idea how it got there. He decided to take it back after reading about the fine amnesty in a local newspaper.
“Of course, we expected long overdue books to be returned, but certainly not something from the late 19th century!” the library said.
The magazine will not return to circulation and may instead be preserved in the library’s local history collection.
