Luxembourg deploys additional drone detection systems after airport shutdown
Luxembourg has deployed additional detection systems to strengthen its airspace monitoring after unidentified drones forced the country's only airport to temporarily suspend operations, the government said on Sept. 20.
The new equipment includes resources provided by foreign partners and is intended to improve authorities' ability to monitor the country's airspace and assess potential threats.
The move follows the temporary suspension of flight operations at Luxembourg Airport on the evening of Sept. 18 after unidentified and unauthorized drones were spotted.
Prime Minister Luc Frieden said Luxembourg had encountered "something new" in recent days, with authorities observing what he described as "potentially bigger drones" in the country's airspace.
Police received several additional reports of suspected drones on the evening of Sept. 19. After checking the reports, however, authorities determined that none required an operational response, the government said.
Luxembourg has launched an investigation into the drone incidents, while a dedicated drone assessment cell continues to work with partners to monitor the situation.
Authorities have not said where the drones came from or who operated them.
