Norway pledges $54 million to support Ukraine's energy sector
Norway will provide 500 million Norwegian kroner ($54 million) to support Ukraine's energy sector as Russia continues attacking the country's energy infrastructure, Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal announced on October 27.
Norwegian Energy Minister Terje Aasland announced the funding during a visit to Kyiv, where the two ministers signed a memorandum to strengthen energy cooperation.
The agreement updates a previous memorandum signed in June 2024 and outlines cooperation on restoring and expanding Ukraine's electricity generation capacity, including hydropower and other renewable energy sources.
It also covers decentralized power generation, energy storage systems, grid reliability and cooperation in the gas sector.
Shmyhal said the ministers discussed attracting investment to rebuild and modernize Ukraine's energy infrastructure, as well as coordinating equipment deliveries, emergency reserves and contributions to Ukraine's Energy Support Fund.
He also briefed Aasland on changes in Russia's tactics in attacking Ukrainian energy facilities.
The new funding comes as Ukraine works to repair its damaged energy system and strengthen its resilience ahead of winter.
