Man wanted for draft evasion shot dead after opening fire on police officers in Odesa

A 45-year-old Odesa resident who was wanted for violating military registration rules opened fire on patrol officers during a document check and was later shot dead by police during his arrest, the National Police of Ukraine reported.

The man refused to cooperate with negotiators and fired an automatic weapon at KORD unit officers and their vehicle when special forces arrived to detain him. Two patrol officers sustained gunshot wounds.

"The use of force was necessary to stop the threat to the lives of law enforcement officers," the police said.

The suspect was located hiding in an unfinished building. While negotiations were underway, he began shooting from the third floor. Members of the KORD special unit returned fire, and the man was killed.

An investigative team is working at the scene. The State Bureau of Investigation and the prosecutor’s office have been notified of the incident.
