Ukraine’s Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office checking for data breach after alleged Russian hack

Ukraine’s Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office is conducting a thorough check to determine whether any of its data was stolen following reports that Russian-linked hackers compromised dozens of email accounts belonging to Ukrainian law enforcement officials, including SAPO staff, the agency told hromadske.

So far, no facts of data theft from the SAPO have been established, but the verification is still ongoing, the office added.

Earlier, Reuters reported, citing the British-American cyber threat research collective Ctrl-Alt-Intel, that hackers linked to Russia had breached more than 170 email accounts of employees from various Ukrainian law enforcement agencies.

The targets included specialists investigating corruption and collaboration cases. According to the report, the hackers compromised accounts managed by the SAPO, as well as the Asset Recovery and Management Agency (ARMA) and the Training Center for Prosecutors of Ukraine.

The hackers allegedly stole data from at least one senior SAPO employee. Among the victims was also Yaroslava Maksymenko, acting head of ARMA. In the Training Center for Prosecutors, 44 employees’ email accounts were reportedly hacked, including that of deputy director Oleh Duka.

The mentioned officials did not respond to Reuters’ requests for comment. hromadske has reached out to ARMA and is awaiting a response.
