Zelenskyy announces first combat use of Ukraine’s FP-7 ballistic missile

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the first combat use of Ukraine’s domestically developed FP-7 tactical ballistic missile, saying the weapon will now move toward production.

“Ukrainian tactical ballistics. FP-7. First combat use. Thank you for the result. Next comes production. Glory to Ukraine!” Zelenskyy wrote on social media on Oct. 1, posting footage of the launch.

The FP-7 was developed by Ukrainian defense company Fire Point, the manufacturer of the Flamingo cruise missile.

According to previously reported specifications, the FP-7 can carry a warhead of around 150 kilograms (330 pounds) and reach a maximum speed of about 1,500 meters per second.

Zelenskyy previously said that a weapon called Pelican was among those used in a Ukrainian strike on Moscow overnight on Sept. 20. Hromadske earlier reported that Pelican was a name associated with the FP-7.

It remains unclear, however, whether the weapon used in that strike was the same FP-7 missile whose first combat use Zelenskyy announced on Wednesday, or another weapon carrying the Pelican name.
