Ukraine receives remains of 252 people from Russia, identification pending

Ukraine has repatriated the remains of 252 people whom Russia claims were Ukrainian service members killed in the war, the Ukrainian Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War reported on October 22.

Ukrainian law enforcement officers and forensic experts will examine the remains to establish the identities of the deceased.

The identification process is necessary because previous repatriations have included the remains of Russian nationals among those Moscow presented as fallen Ukrainian soldiers.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has previously said that some of the bodies transferred by Russia were accompanied by Russian passports.

Ukraine is also working to improve its identification procedures. Officials recently announced plans to establish a coordinating body under the National Security and Defense Council to accelerate the process.
