Russian airports close as drones attack Moscow, 10 oblasts
Drones attacked Moscow and multiple Russian regions overnight on Wednesday, forcing the temporary closure of major airports, with Russia’s Defense Ministry claiming 219 drones were downed, Russian officials reported.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that air defenses intercepted 74 drones approaching the capital.
The airports Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo, Vnukovo, and Zhukovsky suspended operations under a “Kover” protocol, fully closing airspace, but resumed by 5:30 a.m., according to Rosaviatsiya.
Russia’s Defense Ministry initially stated 114 drones were downed from 6:00 p.m. to 11:50 p.m. on May 21 over the Moscow, Kursk, Ryazan, Oryol, Kaluga and Tula oblasts, and occupied Crimea.
At 8:20 a.m. on Thursday, the ministry clarified that 105 drones were shot down overnight across ten oblasts: Moscow, Oryol, Kursk, Belgorod, Tula, Kaluga, Voronezh, Lipetsk, Smolensk, and Bryansk.
