Death toll in Russian attack on Ternopil rises to 16, number of injured stands at 64

At least 16 people died and 64 others were wounded when Russian drones and missiles struck two residential high-rises in Ternopil early on Wednesday, the National Police of Ukraine reported.

Rescuers and other emergency services were working nonstop at the sites, searching for missing individuals after the assault around 7 a.m.

Russian forces targeted the apartment buildings on Vasyl Stus and 15 Kvitnia streets, igniting fires and causing significant structural damage.

Industrial and critical infrastructure sites also sustained damage, with the extent of destruction still being assessed.

Operational headquarters have been set up at the two hardest-hit locations, where victims or those searching for relatives can report missing persons and submit DNA samples for identification via the National Police's mobile forensic lab.

Investigators have opened a probe into war crimes under Part 2 of Article 438 of Ukraine's Criminal Code.
