Ukraine aims to inflict 200 Russian casualties per square kilometer of advance — DM Fedorov
Ukraine's strategic objective is to raise Russian casualties to 200 troops per square kilometer of territorial advance, Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said at a closed briefing, as quoted by the Kyiv Independent.
According to Fedorov, Russia was losing 67 soldiers per square kilometer in October. That figure rose to 165 in January, 244 in February, 254 in March and 179 in April.
"The situation on the ground confirms that Ukraine has managed to significantly slow the enemy's advance and is gradually reclaiming the initiative. At the same time, we are stepping up offensive operations and liberating territory," Fedorov said.
He noted that in April 2026, Russia lost 35,203 troops — killed and wounded. The figure stood at 35,351 in March and 34,544 in December 2025, indicating a sustained upward trend in Russian losses.
Since the start of 2026, total Russian military losses have exceeded 141,500 personnel, with more than 83,000 of those classified as irreversible losses. According to Ukraine's General Staff, this marks the fifth consecutive month in which Russia has lost more troops than it can replace through mobilization. Ukrainian drone units have played a key role in driving those figures.
Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine's Armed Forces Oleksandr Syrskyi recently said the number of offensive actions carried out by Ukraine's Defense Forces has surpassed that of Russian forces for the first time.
