2 women die after Russian drone attack on commuter train in Sumy Oblast
Two women have died in hospital from injuries sustained in a Russian drone attack on a commuter train in Ukraine's Sumy Oblast on Sept. 8, regional authorities said.
The women, aged 60 and 79, had suffered severe injuries in the attack, Sumy Oblast Governor Oleh Hryhorov said on Sept. 9. Two other people remain in serious condition.
Russian drones struck the commuter diesel train in Sumy district, setting its locomotive and a passenger car on fire. Ten people were injured in the attack, according to Ukraine's State Emergency Service.
Russian forces launched another strike while emergency workers were extinguishing the fire and helping transport the injured to ambulances. No rescue workers were injured.
Earlier the same day, Russian drones also attacked a Kyiv-Sumy passenger train in Sumy district. Passengers had been evacuated before the strike, and no casualties were reported.
Oleksandr Pertsovskyi, head of Ukraine's state railway operator Ukrzaliznytsia, said Russian forces have increasingly targeted passenger trains and railway infrastructure in frontline regions.
