Ukraine strikes major Russian oil refinery as Zelenskyy vows response to energy attacks
Ukrainian forces struck a major Russian oil refinery in Syzran overnight, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Sept. 15, describing the attack as part of Ukraine’s response to continued Russian strikes on its energy and critical infrastructure.
“Russia does not stop its attacks on our energy sector, ordinary logistics and critical infrastructure. And our responses to this are tangible,” Zelenskyy said.
The Syzran refinery, owned by Russia’s state-controlled oil giant Rosneft, is one of the largest refining facilities in Samara Oblast. It processes between 7 million and 8.5 million metric tons of crude oil annually and produces gasoline, diesel, aviation fuel and other petroleum products.
Zelenskyy said Ukrainian forces also struck a drone manufacturing facility in Taganrog, a launch site in Russia’s Oryol region and targets in the Black Sea.
