Ukraine plans 21 alternative bridge crossings as Russia steps up attacks on key routes

Ukraine plans to build 21 alternative bridge crossings as Russian forces intensify attacks on transport infrastructure, with construction already underway in Kyiv, Infrastructure Minister Mykola Kalashnyk said on October 30.

Speaking during a parliamentary question-and-answer session, Kalashnyk said the government had approved a project to accelerate the construction of bridge crossings, including routes across the Dnipro River.

The first crossings are expected to become operational in early 2027, he said.

According to the minister, the project calls for rapidly constructed, fully functional bridges rather than temporary embankments or dams. International donor organizations are helping finance the work.

The announcement follows a series of Russian attacks on bridges in Kyiv, including repeated strikes on the city's Northern and Southern bridges.

On October 27, a Russian ballistic missile struck the Southern Bridge again, damaging infrastructure used by the Kyiv metro.

Kyiv authorities have also announced plans to allocate 1 billion hryvnias (approximately $24 million) for crossings over the Dnipro River and access roads leading to them.
