Biden announces $225 million in aid to Ukraine and publicly apologises for the delay in decisions
US President Joe Biden announced a new military aid package worth $225 million.
He made the statement during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, a CNN correspondent reports.
During the meeting, Biden apologized for the months-long delay in U.S. military aid and added: “We’re still in. Completely. Thoroughly.”
As previously reported by the Associated Press, the new aid will include, in particular, ammunition for HIMARS systems, which the Ukrainian military can use to strike at Russian territory. The package will also include mortar systems and artillery shells.
In addition, according to AP sources, the package will include missiles for HAWK air defense systems, Stinger anti-aircraft missiles, Javelin and AT-4 anti-tank systems, 155-mm howitzers, armored vehicles, trailers, patrol boats, explosive materials, and a wide range of spare parts.
These weapons will be provided to Ukraine from existing U.S. stocks so that they can quickly reach the front.
It should be noted that on June 6, Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in France. There he took part in the celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the Allied landings in Normandy. As part of this visit, he and French President Emmanuel Macron plan to sign two agreements worth €650 million. The funds will support Ukrainian local authorities and critical infrastructure.
